WFP Wins 2020 Nobel Peace Prize

6.000 Trucks, 100 Planes, 30 Ships and Vessels

Geneva, 12 October 2020 — The 2020 Nobel Peace Prize was awarded to the United Nations World Food Programme, the humanitarian agency that is usually the first responder, within 48 hours on average, when disaster strikes. At any given moment there are 6.000 trucks, 30 ships and vessels, on the move, and 100 planes from WFP in the skies, delivering food assistance and other essential commodities on behalf of the humanitarian community, to remote places around the globe. In March and early April, at the beginning of the lockdowns in Europe, and North and Sub-Sahara Africa, the WFP created an emergency corridor to deliver food, medicine, and goods to internally displaced populations.

The UN Brief interviewed Mr. Tomson Phiri, spokesperson for the United Nations World Food Programme in Geneva. Mr. Phiri has worked for the WFP in several countries in Africa and knows first-hand how the organization works, and the importance of fast aid delivery after disaster strikes. Mr. Phiri made a passionate statement on how the Nobel Peace prize award might serve as a wake-up call to the world to end hunger, and that the prize belongs to all aid workers.
